PE curriculum aims to help students:

Develop motor and sports skills and acquire knowledge through physical activity, and cultivate positive values and attitudes for the development of a habit of doing exercises;

Acquire good health, physical fitness and body co-ordination through leading an active and healthy lifestyle;

Promote desirable moral behaviour, co-operation in communal life, ability to make decisions and appreciation of aesthetic movements;

Become responsible citizens who contribute to the building of an active and healthy community

ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES

The public assessment aims to assess candidates' abilities to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts in the Physical Education curriculum
  2. explain, apply and evaluate theories and principles regarding self enhancement, body maintenance, and caring for the community
  3. communicate ideas effectively using PE terminology
  4. demonstrate good attainment in physical fitness
  5. demonstrate well-developed movement skills in a variety of situations
  6. apply and evaluate individual/team tactics in game/competition situations

MODE OF ASSESSMENT

The public assessment in 2027 will consist of a theoretical examination component (Papers 1 & 2) and a practical examination component (Paper 3) as outlined in the following table: 2 hours ---

PUBLIC EXAMINATION

The theoretical examination serves to assess the knowledge candidates have acquired in the course of studying PE. Different kinds of items will be used to assess students' performance in a broad range of abilities. The practical examination serves to assess candidates' competence in two selected physical activities and the level of physical fitness attained.

Paper 1 comprises two sections, A and B. Section A consists of multiple-choice questions and Section B consists of short questions. Candidates have to attempt all questions in Paper 1.

Paper 2 consists of three long questions set on three different themes of the curriculum. Candidates have to attempt any two questions in this paper.

Paper 3 consists of assessment routines for physical activities and physical fitness. Candidates have to demonstrate competence in two selected physical activities and each carries 13⅓% of the subject mark. The level of physical fitness attained carries 13⅓% of the subject mark.

The choices of two groups of physical activities are as follows:

Physical Activity 1: Badminton / Basketball / Football / Volleyball / Table Tennis / Handball (choose one)

Physical Activity 2: Athletics# / Gymnastics / Swimming# (choose one)

# Candidates may apply for exemption (partial or full) from Athletics / Swimming practical examination by submitting officially certified results of recognised competitions organised by The Schools Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China / Hong Kong, China Association of Athletics Affiliates / Hong Kong China Swimming Association.

  8. Social Aspects of PE, Sport and Recreation
  9. Sport and Recreation Management

Practicum

The six strands are:

  • Motor and sports skills;
  • Health and fitness;
  • Sports-related values and attitudes;
  • Knowledge and practice of safety;
  • Knowledge of movement;
  • Aesthetic sensitivity

Learning and Teaching The following principles should be adopted to make the learning and teaching in PE more effective:

To provide safe environment for learning and teaching;

 To have a high physical activity level and maintain sufficient active learning time in lessons;

 To provide a wide range of activities to cater for learner diversity;

 To have fun and enjoyable experience while taking part in physical activities;

 To arrange various activities to facilitate students to apply the skills and knowledge in PE;

To enhance students’ learning effectiveness, teachers should keep abreast of the latest development of PE and sports;

To adopt a life-wide learning approach and encourage students to participate in co-curricular physical activities.

Secondary 4 to 6, senior secondary PE Elective

Curriculum Aims The PE Elective curriculum aims at enabling students to:

Acquire the knowledge and skills, and develop the values and attitudes necessary to pursue an active and healthy life in a self-regulated manner;

Become responsible citizens who contribute to the building of a healthy community and are themselves vigorous, vital and able to convince others to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle;

Integrate physical skills with theoretical learning and use them to support and strengthen their conceptual understanding and higher-order thinking;

Construct knowledge by linking the understandings they develop in PE, sport and recreation with those in other disciplines, and make use of this knowledge in further education and career development;

Apply theories to enhance performance or participation in PE, sport and recreation;

Develop positive sport-related values, attitudes and desirable moral behaviour, and transfer them to their daily life;

Develop the generic skills for lifelong learning.
